C-Hed at Kochi Municipal Corporation and Centre for Urban Studies at Mahatma Gandhi University into MoU

On the 26th of August 2022, the C-hed working with the Kochi Municipal Corporation, and the Centre for Urban Studies, working at the Mahatma Gandhi University, entered into a working association, through a very significant Memorandum of Understanding.

Through this association, the Centre for Heritage, Environment and Development (C-hed), the institution functioning as the research and development wing of the Kochi Municipal Corporation, and the Centre for Urban Studies, developed at the School of International Relations and Politics at the university in 2021 will engage in emerging urban domains. This will enhance the much-needed interaction between city administration, research, and students in academia. In addition, students, planners, architects, researchers and administrators holistically link urban research environments and upcoming projects, as per the directors of these centres.

A primary objective of this understanding is also to further the Centre for Urban Studies’ ongoing engagements with specific frames like urban ecology, urban geography, urban planning, political ecology and urban spatiality, in both their academic scenarios as well as urban contexts. The PhD scholars currently associated with the centre, the Masters students taking up urban modules, as well as young ethnographers will engage more with urban contemporaneity and research environs.

The Honourable Mayor of Kochi municipal corporation, Adv. M. Anilkumar, jointly with the Honourable vice chancellor of M G University, Prof. Sabu Thomas, declared the MoU. The registrar of the university, Prof. B Prakash Kumar and the Mayor will sign the understanding to effect. The director of c-hed, Dr. Rajan Chedambath and the director of Centre for Urban Studies, Dr. Mathew A. Varghese gave overview of the respective centres as well as the nature of collaboration.
