Comprehensive Report on Interstate Migrant Worker Policy Released
Amid ongoing discussions by the state government of Kerala to update its policy for interstate migrant workers, a significant workshop conducted by the Centre for Migration Policy and Inclusive Governance (CMPIG), Science and Engineering Research Board Project (SERB CRG/2021/004314), and Mahatma Gandhi University in collaboration with the Disha Foundation has culminated in the release of a comprehensive report. This document presents a series of recommendations to spark dialogue on a new interstate migrant law, providing critical insights and guidance for the government to consider.
The report emphasizes the need for policies that safeguard the rights and welfare of migrant workers, proposing the development of a migrant-friendly legal framework that encompasses social, cultural, health, and occupational rights. By implementing these recommendations, Kerala could set a precedent for ensuring the protection and well-being of its migrant workforce.
Additionally, the report advocates for organising similar workshops across all 14 districts of Kerala. The insights gathered from these workshops should be consolidated and coordinated to inform the legislation process, ensuring that the voices and concerns of migrant workers are thoroughly addressed.
This initiative reflects Kerala’s commitment to enhancing the living and working conditions of migrant workers, potentially positioning the state as a model for progressive migrant labour policies in India.
