The School of International Relations and Politics at MG University successfully organized a workshop titled “Enhancing the Health and Social Protection Policy Framework for Migrant Workers in Kottayam District.” This collaborative event was conducted in partnership with Science and Engineering Research Board Project (CRG/2021/004314), Disha Foundation and the Centre for Migration Policy and Inclusive Governance (CMPIG), SIRP, MG University. The workshop aimed to address the challenges faced by migrant workers and develop effective policies to meet their needs. Dr. MV Bijulal, the Principal Investigator of the SERB project at MG University and Chairperson of CMPIG, served as the key figure for the event.
Ms. V. Vigneshwari IAS, the Kottayam District Collector, emphasised the workshop’s significance as a starting point for addressing migrant worker challenges at an academic level. She stressed the need to reassess existing government activities and consider the well-being of migrant workers beyond just health concerns. Ms. Vigneshwari also encouraged participants to study the problems faced by western countries while dealing with migrant workers, particularly in terms of social protection and education.
The workshop commenced with a context-setting speech by Dr. Anjali Borhade, the head of Disha Foundation, who ensured that the event had a meaningful purpose and clear direction. Distinguished guests and key speakers included Prof. CT Aravindakumar, the Vice Chancellor of MG University, and Ms. V. Vigneshwari IAS, the Kottayam District Collector. Prof. Aravindakumar highlighted the importance of understanding the baseline knowledge about migrant workers and acknowledged the paradigm shift in Kerala’s approach towards them. He expressed confidence in the data collected from the workshop’s delegates, believing it would significantly contribute to future policy-making endeavours.
Dr. C Vinodan, the Director of the School of International Relations and Politics, and Adv. Reji Zacharia, a member of the MG University syndicate, delivered felicitation speeches. Dr. Anjali Borhade, the Director of Disha Foundation, handled the pivotal session of the workshop, providing comprehensive insights and context for meaningful discussions and subsequent policy enhancements.
The workshop agenda, focused on various aspects of improving health and social protection policies for migrant workers. The discussions aimed to provide valuable insights and set the stage for in-depth deliberations. A diverse group of 50 participants from civil, administrative, academic, and migrant representative participated, fostering a comprehensive understanding of federal policy-making mechanisms.
The workshop concluded on a positive note, with the expectation that the shared knowledge and discussions held during the event would contribute to the development of comprehensive and inclusive policies for the migrant worker community. Ultimately, these efforts aim to foster a harmonious and prosperous society for all.
